Folk Songs & Brahms Saturday March 23 2019 at 7:30 PM

The Rex
× John Kastelic collaborates with The Black Dog String Quartet to present a premier performance of his songs for voice and string quartet. Erasing the lines between classical music and contemporary folk music, these latest songs sparkle with ingenuity, thoughtfulness, and a breathtaking lyricism. As a counterpoint to the songs, the group presents Brahms' stunning String Quintet No. 2, a late work which reveals a particular love of Hungarian folk music.

Featuring the Black Dog String Quartet with John Kastelic.

Carmina Burana plunges us into the carnal excess of medieval ritual and vice. The enormous orchestra and choir, beguiling cast of soloists, and fascinating mix of comedy and tragedy, make this one of the most enduringly popular works of the 20th century. Les Étourneaux (starlings) by Nelson BC composer Keiko Devaux evokes the immense landscapes and crystalline air of the BC Interior, while Montreal composer Maxime Goulet’s "theatrical" concerto for clarinet completes the program.

Guest Artists: Chelsea Rus Soprano; Martin Renner Wallace, Tenor; James Westman, Baritone; Sally Arai, Clarinet; KSO Chorus.

Programme: MAXIME GOULET: Fishing Story KEIKO DEVAUX: Les Étourneaux KARL ORFF: Carmina Burana
